Personal
Timothy Molefe Modise was born in Pretoria and raised in Ga-rankuwa where he attended Agisanang Primary school and matriculated from Moruleng High School near Rustenburg in 1978. He was briefly a student at the Fort Hare University in 1980 but could not finish as the university was closed down then following student uprisings. He holds a Marketing Management Certificate from UNISA and a Diploma in Financial Management from Damelin Business College.
Career
He has been involved in Broadcasting since 1980 having worked in various capacities on various radio stations. Mr Modise also presented a current affairs program on TV and he was also a columnist for a Sunday News Paper (City press) until 30 June 2001. He was a political analyst for Credit Suisse First Boston until April 2002. He was appointed Chairman of the Proudly South African Campaign in July 2001 which he stepped down from in March 2005.
He hosted his own morning talk program on SA Fm Radio until November 2002 and since 13 January 2003 he has been the host of a simulcast talk programme on Radio 702 and Cape Talk - “the Tim Modise Network” . Mr Modise was also co-presenter for the actuality programme “Carte Blanche” on M-Net, which he joined in January 2003 until December 2004.
Another of his opportunities have been his own Sports Talk show on one of the Super Sport channels for M-Net – “Inside Sport” – which he presented starting in August 2004 until June 2005. In July 2005 he joined up with SABC again to host ModiseKa 9 on SABC 2 – a unique interactive programme looking at current affairs with guests but catering for the Sotho speaking community for the first time. The last ModiseKa9 show went out on air on Wednesday 15 March and he started a new programme with the same format on SABC 2 “Lekgotleng Le Modise” on Monday 20 March 2006.
It has also been his privilege to cover all the inauguration ceremonies since 1994 for radio. In addition he also does a lot of public appearances such as MC work and public speaking which include Mr Nelson Mandela’s 85th birthday party as well as the function held in honour of Dr Oliver Thambo - these of which he views as personal highlights.
Community involvement
He is the chairperson of the Ga-rankuwa Forum for Excellence who’s goal it is to promote education in the community. The initiative received the Award for “Most resourceful community organization is supporting Education” from The MEC for Education in the North West Province in early 2003. Tim also serves on the board of Valued Citizens Initiative and the South African Students Travel Service and also on the Board of the International Marketing Council.
He formed the Tim Modise Foundation in 2005 which is a body formed to develop partnerships with stakeholders in society with the view of improving the lives of individuals and society at large. He has adopted the previously known Agisanang Primary school in Ga-rankuwa which resulted in a name change to the Tim Modise Primary School in January 2006. The Mentorship Programme for Progressive Youth (a mentorship programme meant to assist young people in the society to familiarize themselves with the world of work) is being set up by the foundation at present specifically for the Ga-rankuwa community.
Mr Modise was also appointed chairperson of the BEE Scorecard for the Department Environmental affairs and Tourism in Mid 2004 and played a part in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda’s “Habitat for Humanity” Housing project in 2004.
Awards
He received the Rotary Award for community Service in 1999, Best Broadcaster – Radio Award in 1991 and was the Financial Mail runner-up political analyst of the year 1999 – 2000. In March 2001 he was awarded the prestigious “Reconciliation Award” which he received from the Institute for Justice and reconciliation for his contribution to reconciliation in South Africa. GQ Magazine’s reader’s choice for best TV and Radio presenter of the year 2001 was bestowed on him in August 2001. In October 2001 he also received the Presidents’ Award from IPM as well as the “Communicator of the Year” awarded by Technikon Pretoria. He also received the Paul Harris Award from the Rotary Club in 2002.
In January 2004 he was awarded the prestigious 2003 International Jaime Brunet Award for the promotion of human rights, which has previously been awarded to the Dalai Lama. He also received the “Best Man” Award from Men’s’ Health magazine chosen by the readers in 2004 as well as the Old Mutual SA Leadership Award – media category in August 2004.
He was also awarded the TOSA Award (Tswane Outstanding Service Award) by the Christ Centred Churh in September 2005.
General
Mr Modise can speak various African languages.
Hobbies and interests
Mr Modise loves Jazz music and appreciates the time he gets to spend with his family and friends when his schedule allows. He loves reading and also practices the art of Karate.
