Afrikaans BV Grades 10-12 Translations (Project Continuation Pending)

Project details

Partner(s):

While the Northern Cape is generally populated by Xhosa speaking Black African people, some areas like the Siyanda and Pofadder areas are exceptions. For example 63.71% of the people in Siyanda are of colored ethnicity. Siyanda district municipality (district code is DC 8) is one of the 5 districts of the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The seat of Siyanda is Upington. The majority (81.65%) of its 209 883 people speak Afrikaans (2001 Census). A mere 0.78% speaks English while 13.62% and 2.57% speak Setswana and IsiXhosa respectively. It is thus imperative for the BusinessVENTURES materials to be delivered in Afrikaans in order to achieve maximum impact.

Our Involvement:

In line with the South African position on the languages of instruction in education, SAIE has made initial provisions on the translation of its educational materials into local languages. Education minister Naledi Pandor on the 15th of February 2007 strongly supported the use of Afrikaans and other indigenous languages as media of instruction in schools. According to Census 2001, Afrikaans is spoken as a first tongue by 13.3% of the population – this is significantly higher than the proportion that speaks English as a first language and third to Xhosa and Zulu. The majority of Afrikaans speakers live in the northern Cape (68%), followed by Western Cape (55.3%), Gauteng (14.4%), Free State (11.9%), Eastern cape (9.3%) and North West province (7.5%). Afrikaans is the first language of instruction in many schools. Despite this, however, most SAIE materials are currently only available in English. This has constrained program implementation in some schools in the past, most notably in the Northern Cape, Free State and North West. Despite our very positive relationships with Departments of Education, we have not managed to implement programs in some cases due to the lack of an Afrikaans medium of the program.

Project Progress:

ABSA is a co-funder of this project in which 127 BusinessVENTURES materials for grades 10 and 12 are translated to Afrikaans. This benefits 35 schools in the Afrikaans speaking populations in the Siyanda and Pofadder areas of the Northern Cape.

BusinessVentures

Business VENTURES is a series of entrepreneurship learning resources for grades 2-12. Each of the modules provides all the materials required to facilitate and learn about entrepreneurship and business during one year. SAIE has designed a set of learning materials for each grade at schools. These materials comply with all the requirements to teach the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) learning area (which includes entrepreneurship.) These resources are packaged in a zipped porticase and are reusable year on year.
