Partner(s):SAIE’s partner, the Stutterheim Educational Trust identified the target schools and regions for BusinessVENTURES training and teaching materials. Named after the town’s 1857 founder, Baron Von Stutterheim, Stutterheim (site for ABSA funded Eastern Cape BusinessVENTURES educator training) is located in Amahlati municipality (Municipal Code EC124) of the Amatole district (District code DC12) in the Eastern Cape. The service area of Amatole district includes East London and King Williams Town. The district stretches over 23577km² but educators represent schools beyond the district where Business Ventures training is conducted. Amatole district has about 1 664 412 residents. 91.66% of the population is Xhosa speaking Africans and 92.5% of the total population is Black African. Amatole has 1203719 learners from grade 1 to 12. The economically active group (between 15 and 64) is around 996850 while the dependent population (not economically active) is around 517937 people. 1254135 people had no personal income and another 69798 have incomes below R400. About 140185 people have no family income. 281315 of Amatole’s population are not employed and only about 2960 people are employers. Our Involvement:SAIE provides schools and educators with quality, innovative learning materials (BusinessVENTURES kits) and the requisite training in terms of content knowledge, methodology in Outcomes Based Education (OBE) and entrepreneurial development. SAIE’s BusinessVENTURES materials conform to the Department of Education’s (DoE) curriculum structure classified under the Economic and management Sciences (EMS: Grade 2 to 9) and Business Studies (Grades 10 to 12). Learners are empowered through the quality materials and effective teaching, in order to develop entrepreneurial mindsets and business knowledge. This prepares them for either creating their own jobs or participating in the post school life in a more entrepreneurial way. Project Progress:On 29 and 30 January 2007, nine grade 4 educators received BusinessVENTURES training in the Amatole project. Grade 6 training took place on 8 and 9 February where 6 educators were trained. Follow-up support and school visits were conducted during the third term. |
