Project details

Partner(s):

The schools and regions that receive BusinessVENTURES educator training are selected by SAIE’s partner, the Department of Education (DoE). Mdantsane, the site of SEDA Eastern Cape BusinessVENTURES is administered under the Buffalo City municipality (Municipal code EC125), a constituent of Amatole District (District code DC12). Amatole’s service area consists of East London and King Williams Town, the capital city of the Eastern Cape. Its geographical area has a magnitude of 23577km². Educators may come from beyond these boundaries for BusinessVENTURES Training. Amatole’s population is roughly 1 664 412 the majority of which (91.66%) are Xhosa speaking people. 92.5% are Black people of African descent. Amatole’s population of learners is roughly 1203719 from grade 1 to 12. The economically active group (aged between 15 and 64) is around 996850. The non-economically active on the other hand are 517937 in number. The Amatole population with no personal income is about 1254135 and those whose income is below R400 are about 69798. Furthermore, some 140185 people have no family income. With 2960 employers, 281315 people are unemployed.

Our Involvement:

SAIE provides schools and educators with quality, innovative learning materials (BusinessVENTURES kits) and the requisite training in terms of content knowledge, methodology in Outcomes Based Education (OBE) and entrepreneurial development. SAIE’s BusinessVENTURES materials conform to the Department of Education’s (DoE) curriculum structure classified under the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS: Grade 2 to 9) and Business Studies (Grades 10 to 12). Learners are empowered through the quality materials and effective teaching, in order to develop entrepreneurial mindsets and business knowledge. This prepares them for either creating their own jobs or participating in the post school life in a more entrepreneurial way.

Project Progress:

In the Buffalo City project, 25 grade eight educators from 20 schools; 24 grade nine educators from ten schools and 12 grade ten educators from ten schools received Business VENTURES training from 8 to 9 February 2007. 11 kits were distributed for each of the grades eight, nine and ten. Some of the participating educators who had heard about BusinessVENTURES displayed much enthusiasm. Other educators suggested that SAIE should create similar programs for Accounting and Economics. As one educator put it: “I wish we could have more of these workshops as they give clarity to most aspects of the department’s curricula.”
