Chatsworth Phase 2

Project details

Partner(s):

To facilitate the identification of target schools for BusinessVENTURES training, SAIE partners with the Department of Education. The Metropolitan Municipality eThekwini (Municipal Code ETH) of Sisonke District (District code DC43) is the local government administrative unit for Chatsworth Teachers Center, the site for Umsobomvu BusinessVENTURES training in KwaZulu Natal. The geographical area of Sisonke is 10109km² and has a modest population of 298 392. Educators may attend BusinessVENTURES training from schools beyond these boundaries. The dominant groups among the 93.95% majority of Blacks are Zulu (73.83%) and Xhosa (16.9%). The economically active group in the 15 to 64 years is around 242478 while those who are not economically active are close to 142042. Sisonke has a leaner population of 316044 from grades 1 to 12. 37228 people have no household income, 360480 have no personal income while 33318 people have incomes below R400. 58228 are unemployed, and there are 991 employers.

Our Involvement:

SAIE provides schools and educators with quality, innovative learning materials (BusinessVENTURES kits) and the requisite training in terms of content knowledge, methodology in Outcomes Based Education (OBE) and entrepreneurial development. SAIE’s Business Ventures materials conform to the Department of Education’s (DoE) curriculum structure classified under the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS: Grade 2 to 9) and Business Studies (Grades 10 to 12). Learners are empowered through the quality materials and effective teaching, in order to develop entrepreneurial mindsets and business knowledge. This prepares them for either creating their own jobs or participating in the post school life in a more entrepreneurial way.

Project Progress:

The Sisonke BusinessVENTURES training was conducted at Bergville on the 10th and 17th of February 2007 and on the 24th of February 2007 Chatsworth. In the Bergville session, 19 schools sent grade ten educators, 17 schools sent grade 9 educators and the grade 8 educators came from 15 schools. 21 grade ten kits, 26 grade nine kits and 25 grade eight kits were distributed. At the Chatsworth session, 13 schools sent grade ten educators, 10 schools sent grade nine educators and the grade eight educators came from 8 schools. 16 grade ten kits, 14 grade nine kits and 14 grade eight kits were distributed.
