Food and Trees for Africa

Project details

Partner(s):

Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA) was initiated by numerous greening organizations in South Africa which had agreed that the biggest dimension of environmental disaster in South Africa is the one which affects people’s quality of life. The objectives of the FTFA address many developmental needs. These include contributions to greening, sustainable natural resource management and food security, creating an awareness of environmental conservation in southern Africa, poverty alleviation, capacity building and skills development (increasingly for Aids patients) FTFA emphasizes the significance of environmental upliftment as a critical urban renewal factor. They are among the world's leading organizations whose local efforts enrich the global environment. FTFA recognizes that the development process is inadequate for a sustainable solution if economics is not factored in. They partner with government, private sector, public sectors and civil society in their various campaigns and projects.

Our Involvement:

SAIE meets the skills development, capacity building, environmental protection and sustainable development components of this Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA) project. AgriPlanner training enables this FFTA affiliated community to engage in multi-thronged sustainable activities that help them with skills, food security as well as income generation. In this project, SAIE provides AgriPlanner training for 18 members of staff from FTFA, improving their developmental interventions.

Project Progress:

5 facilitators from Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA) and 5 farmers from Indali farms (an FTFA project) have completed their AgriPlanner training. FTFA has received 1 AgriPlanner Kit and 30 AgriPlanner workbooks for the training of their constituent farmers and gardeners.

Featured Product

Agri Planner

The AgriPlanner business simulation training tool is designed to assist emerging farmers with their production capacity and financial planning. AgriPlanner goes beyond the practicalities of simply growing to look at how growers could make the most productive use of the land and maximize their financial income. It provides a comprehensive business development and entrepreneurship training programme that adds value to the gardening skills training programmes and enables growers and small-scale farmers to take the first steps from basic subsistence (food security) to income-generation and small business development. AgriPlanner directly supports growers in establishing and running viable businesses and gives the knowledge and means through which they can begin to enter the formal economy.
