Frances Baard

Project details

Partner(s):

SAIE’s partner in identifying schools and regions that receive BusinessVENTURES training is the Department of Education (DoE). Kuruman, the venue for SEDA’s Northern Cape BusinessVENTURES educator training is administered under Sol Plaatjie Local Municipality (Municipal Code NC091). Sol Plaatjie is a component of Frances Baard District (District Code DC9) with an area of 12349km². Educators often come from schools beyond the region where training is conducted. The major populations of Frances Baard’s 324 814 people are divided between Afrikaans (42.47%) and Setswana (43.77%). Black African people are however the most populous (60.52%) followed by Coloreds (27.11%) and Whites (11.81%). Frances Baard’s learner population between grade 1 and 12 is around 232177. The economically active between 15 and 64 are close to 210496 while the non-economically active group is sized at 88594 people. Nearly 14720 people have no family income; 212302 people have no personal income and 19168 more have an income below R400. 72881 people are employed in a place with only 801 employers.

Our Involvement:

SAIE provides schools and educators with quality, innovative learning materials (BusinessVENTURES kits) and the requisite training in terms of content knowledge, methodology in Outcomes Based Education (OBE) and entrepreneurial development. SAIE’s BusinessVENTURES materials conform to the Department of Education’s (DoE) curriculum structure classified under the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS: Grade 2 to 9) and Business Studies (Grades 10 to 12). Learners are empowered through the quality materials and effective teaching, in order to develop entrepreneurial mindsets and business knowledge. This prepares them for either creating their own jobs or participating in the post school life in a more entrepreneurial way.

Project Progress:

For the Frances Baard project, nineteen grade 8 educators from fifteen schools; eighteen grade 9 educators from fifteen schools and six grade 10 educators from five schools received BusinessVENTURES training on the 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th of March 2007. 11 kits each for grades 8, 9 and 10 were distributed. The follow up training and support for the Frances Baard project is pending.

BusinessVentures

Business VENTURES is a series of entrepreneurship learning resources for grades 2-12. Each of the modules provides all the materials required to facilitate and learn about entrepreneurship and business during one year. SAIE has designed a set of learning materials for each grade at schools. These materials comply with all the requirements to teach the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) learning area (which includes entrepreneurship.) These resources are packaged in a zipped porticase and are reusable year on year.
