Partner(s):The Department of Education (DoE) is SAIE’s partner in selecting target schools and areas for BusinessVENTURES training. The training for the George project is rolled out in George Local Municipality (Municipal Code WC044). George is in the Eden District Municipality (District Code DC4) of Western Cape Province. George municipality has a population of approximately 135,409 and a geographical area of the municipality is 1071.6km². George’s racial makeup comprises the following groups: Black African 27.28%; Coloured 50.38%; Indian/Asian 0.26% and White 22.08%. In George municipality 67.1% of residents speak Afrikaans, 7.4% speak English, and 24.5% speak IsiXhosa. George has 89502 economically active people between 15 and 64 years and 31063 non-economically active people. George has 102499 learners from grades 1 to 12. 4905 people have no household income, 78673 people have no personal income while 5874 people have an income below R400. There are 366 employers and 16942 unemployed people. Our Involvement:SAIE provides schools and educators with quality, innovative learning materials (BusinessVENTURES kits) and the requisite training in terms of content knowledge, methodology in Outcomes Based Education (OBE) and entrepreneurial development. SAIE’s BusinessVENTURES materials conform to the Department of Education’s (DoE) curriculum structure classified under the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS: Grade 2 to 9) and Business Studies (Grades 10 to 12). Learners are empowered through the quality materials and effective teaching, in order to develop entrepreneurial mindsets and business knowledge. This prepares them for either creating their own jobs or participating in the post school life in a more entrepreneurial way. Project Progress:Training for the George Project was completed between 3 and 10 February 2006. Seventy seven educators for grades 2-7 received Business VENTURES training. 60 Business VENTURES kits were distributed and to be implemented in the teaching of 2400 learners. The first follow-up training occurred between 18 and 21 April 2006 and the second follow-up was conducted between 25 and 28 July. Classroom support was provided from the 24th to the 28th of July 2006 to 22 educators. |
