Partner(s):The community development organization Heifer supports families to produce food and income in a sustainable and environmental friendly way using animals. The approach adopted for community empowerment is sensitive to animal rights and welfare. Heifer International operates in KwaZulu Natal, Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces supporting training and supplying livestock. More information on Heifer is accessible on their website http://www.heifer.org.za Our Involvement:SAIE training enables the communities that benefit from Heifer International to acquire the practical operational competencies and business skills to induce commercial functionality and sustainability. SAIE assists them to transcend the level of merely providing for household food security to a level where they attain income generation thereby becoming self reliant. In the Eastern Cape, 20 people are the beneficiaries of SAIE’s AgriPlanner training and Heifer makes arrangements for more toolkits to be distributed to their other offices in KZN and Limpopo for future referral. Project Progress:One AgriPlanner kit and 100 workbooks have been supplied to the Eastern Cape branch of Heifer. One of their projects called Siyazama has already followed AgriPlanner principles for land measurement, crop selection, crop planning and companion planting. They have also successfully conducted market research. Members are in the process of developing their own nursery to reduce their current heavy dependence on external suppliers. |
