Heifer Project Limpopo

Project details

Partner(s):

The community development organization Heifer International supports families to produce food and income in a sustainable and environmental friendly way using animals. The approach adopted for community empowerment is sensitive to animal rights and welfare. Heifer International operates in KwaZulu Natal, Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces supporting training and supplying livestock. More information on Heifer is accessible on their website http://www.heifer.org.za

Our Involvement:

SAIE training enables the communities that benefit from Heifer International to acquire the practical operational competencies and business skills to induce commercial functionality and sustainability. SAIE assists them to transcend the level of merely providing for household food security to a level where they attain income generation thereby becoming self reliant. The entrenchment of AgriPlanner training is designed to flow from the initial four (4) Heifer International facilitators instructed by SAIE trainers to a hundred (100) community beneficiaries in KwaZulu Natal.

Project Progress:

Three facilitators received AgriPlanner training in May 2007 at KwaXima Village, 35 km outside Hillcrest in KwaZulu-Natal. An additional 17 members from the lcal Senzokuhle project (involved in animal husbandry and crop production) also attended the training. A support visit was conducted in October 2007. The trained facilitators have been working with 92 gardeners frm KwaXima Village, Riverside and Centocow. During the support visit, the SAIE project manager observed that harvested crops had been repplaced with seedlings (which never happened before). Trainees now conduct market research to determine which crops are most wanted by the community (spinach and onions). Issues relating to agricultural methods (pests and insects, llow soil fertility levels, and stray animals were addressed during th support visit.

Agri Planner

The AgriPlanner business simulation training tool is designed to assist emerging farmers with their production capacity and financial planning. AgriPlanner goes beyond the practicalities of simply growing to look at how growers could make the most productive use of the land and maximize their financial income. It provides a comprehensive business development and entrepreneurship training programme that adds value to the gardening skills training programmes and enables growers and small-scale farmers to take the first steps from basic subsistence (food security) to income-generation and small business development. AgriPlanner directly supports growers in establishing and running viable businesses and gives the knowledge and means through which they can begin to enter the formal economy.
