Isithumba KZN Community Training

Project details

Partner(s):

Isithumba Adventure Tourism Centre is proud of the work they are doing with their community, by training community members to eventually run the establishment themselves. Isithumba, situated in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa is an imposing dome of rock that overlooks a tranquil stretch of the Umgeni River. The Umgeni River is a source of water for the community, and the Duzi Canoe Marathon which takes place during summer, passes along this river. The village is nestled in the heart of the Valley of a Thousand Hills in the tribal authority of KwaXimba. Traditional Zulu Homesteads encircled by cattle kraals dot the hillsides in the shadow of the mountain. Children play happily in the shallow pools on the edge of the river, while eagles soar in the clear blue-sky overhead.

Near the foot of the mountain a number of beautifully constructed thatched rondavels overlook the sparkling river. This is aptly named Isithumba Adventure Tourism centre, a unique community tourism initiative that provides the local community with an opportunity to earn some much-needed income.

The Isithumba has, for a number of years, been a destination for international tourists. The main reason for this is that people at Isithumba still live traditionally in a rural and scenic setting and this is an attraction for this segment of tourists.
