King William's Town Phase 1

Project details

Partner(s):

The Department of Education is SAIE’s partner that identifies schools and regions for BusinessVENTURES training. King William's Town (the venue for one of Umsobomvu’s Eastern Cape BusinessVENTURES educator training) is situated in the Eastern Cape province and on the Buffalo River, 50 kilometers (42 miles) by rail or about 40 minutes' motorway drive WNW of the Indian Ocean port of East London. King William's Town is the capital city of the Eastern Cape and falls under the jurisdiction of Amatole District (District code DC12) whose service area encompasses East London. Amatole administrative boundaries extend over a geographical area that is 23577km² big. Educators may however come from beyond these boundaries for BusinessVENTURES training. The district has a population of 1 664 412 with a majority of Xhosa speaking Africans who constitute 91.66%. In total, there are 92.5% Black Africans. Amatole has 1203719 learners from grade one to twelve. The economically active group (between 15 and 64) is around 996850 while the economically dependent group numbers 517937. The size of the population with no personal income is about 1254135 and those with an income below R400 are about 69798. A further 140185 people have no family income. Amatole has 2960 employers, and 281315 unemployed people.

Our Involvement:

SAIE provides schools and educators with quality, innovative learning materials (BusinessVENTURES kits) and the requisite training in terms of content knowledge, methodology in Outcomes Based Education (OBE) and entrepreneurial development. SAIE’s BusinessVENTURES materials conform to the Department of Education’s (DoE) curriculum structure classified under the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS: Grade 2 to 9) and Business Studies (Grades 10 to 12). Learners are empowered through the quality materials and effective teaching, in order to develop entrepreneurial mindsets and business knowledge. This prepares them for either creating their own jobs or participating in the post school life in a more entrepreneurial way.

Project Progress:

This training took place from 15th to 18th September 2008. In this project, from the total of 73 educators who were trained, eighty three educators came from 27 schools to receive BusinessVENTURES training. 78 kits were distributed for grades 8 to 11.

Featured Product

BusinessVentures

Business VENTURES is a series of entrepreneurship learning resources for grades 2-12. Each of the modules provides all the materials required to facilitate and learn about entrepreneurship and business during one year. SAIE has designed a set of learning materials for each grade at schools. These materials comply with all the requirements to teach the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) learning area (which includes entrepreneurship.) These resources are packaged in a zipped porticase and are reusable year on year.
