Project details

Partner(s):

The Swartland Municipality has organized AgriPlanner training for its community’s micro farmers. The municipality aims to ensure social and economic stability and growth through the sustainable delivery of all primary and secondary services to all residents. The municipality builds sustainable partnerships with all people and community development groups. The Swartland Region is located within the West Coast Region of South Africa. The West Coast Region, located along the South-West Coast of South Africa, extending from Blaauwberg in the Cape Metropolitan Area in the south, to the provincial border in Namaqualand in the north, all within the Western Cape. The municipality got into a partnership with SAIE to provide AgriPlanner training for agricultural practitioners in their jurisdiction. More information on the municipality is available on their website http://www.swartland.org.za

Our Involvement:

The SAIE partners with the Swartland Municipality to train 16 practitioners from the Swartland Municipality. In this project, no grassroots community based organization was involved as an umbrella body or intermediary for community development, therefore SAIE was involved in direct delivery of AgriPlanner. As a result, a secondary objective was to identify individuals who may be considered as facilitators. This forms a basis for creating more far reaching AgriPlanner training in the area.

Project Progress:

SAIE conducted AgriPlanner training at Malmesbury Library from the 26th to the 2nd of March 2007. 13 participants were private candidates while the remaining 3 came from Masikhule project, Elkana and Moorreesburg Kleinboere Vereniging Project from Swartland. The five day training covered land measurement, financial planning, marketing and daily farming activities. The participants were asked to complete their action planning for inspection during forthcoming follow-ups. Follow-up support was conducted in July and November 2007.

Featured Product

Agri Planner

The AgriPlanner business simulation training tool is designed to assist emerging farmers with their production capacity and financial planning. AgriPlanner goes beyond the practicalities of simply growing to look at how growers could make the most productive use of the land and maximize their financial income. It provides a comprehensive business development and entrepreneurship training programme that adds value to the gardening skills training programmes and enables growers and small-scale farmers to take the first steps from basic subsistence (food security) to income-generation and small business development. AgriPlanner directly supports growers in establishing and running viable businesses and gives the knowledge and means through which they can begin to enter the formal economy.
