Partner(s):

SAIE’s partner in BusinessVENTURES, the Department of Education (DoE) identifies the schools and regions in need of training. Moses Kotane municipality (Municipal Code NW375) is named after firebrand South African politician and freedom fighter Moses Kotane. Kotane was Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA) vice chairman of the trade union federation and political bureau, CPSA General Secretary for many years, and treasurer general of the ANC in exile (Tanzania). This eminent politician was also self taught and a distinguished entrepreneur who opened a furniture business in Alexandria. Moses Kotane local municipality is part of Bojanala District (District Code DC37). Bojanala is 18332km² in size. Educators may come from beyond these boundaries for BusinessVENTURES training. 62.56% of the 1 185 325 big population speak Setswana and the vast majority comprises Black African people constituting 92.23%. Bojanala’s learner population between grades 1 and 12 is approximately 877944. The economically active group between 15 and 64 is 781954, while the non-economically active group is 299600. Nearly 796466 people have no personal income and another 53014 have an income below R400. 80134 people have no family income. 199028 are unemployed and there are 3211 employers.

Our Involvement:

SAIE provides schools and educators with quality, innovative learning materials (BusinessVENTURES) and the requisite training in terms of content knowledge, methodology in Outcomes Based Education (OBE) and entrepreneurial development. SAIE’s Business Ventures materials conform to the Department of Education’s (DoE) curriculum structure classified under the Economic and management Sciences (EMS: Grade 2 to 9) and Business Studies (Grades 10 to 12). Learners are empowered through the quality materials and effective teaching, in order to develop entrepreneurial mindsets and business knowledge. This prepares them for either creating their own jobs or participating in the post school life in a more entrepreneurial way.

Project Progress:

This project has been fully implemented. Sixty four educators (Grades 2 to 7) from ten participating schools were trained in March 2006. Sixty BusinessVENTURES kits were issued to all ten schools. The first follow-up training was conducted on the 8th and 9th May 2006 and at Bathlako Middle School. The second follow-up training took place 4th, 5th and 6th August at Matutu Middle School. In order to maximize gains (observe full extent of implementation) on the second workshop, two days were devoted to schools visits and one day for workshops. Encouraging results were observed during school visits. Module Primary School achieved 100% implementation. The principal of Botman School (herself a BusinessVENTURES facilitator trainee) has been monitoring implementation. At Batlako Primary after the transfer of one trained educator, the new educator had to be familiarized during the second follow-up. The Principal of Mabeskraal, a Business VENTURES trainee and enthusiast was very supportive and he himself taught Grade 5 learners. A new educator was also trained using a class demonstration. At Matutu Middle School, two educators had introduced Business VENTURES to grade 7 learners.
