Nepal BEST game 2010 (Charty funded training)

Communities from various parts of the world benefit from SAIE’s business development training administered by Laura Baylis autonomously. Laura Baylis and Belinda Chaplin are freelance instructors involved in the administration of SAIE’s training programmes worldwide. Laura and Belinda train members of the community at grass-roots level to teach them how to start and run their own businesses. In this project, Laura trains entrepreneurs from Kathmandu, Nepal.

Kathmandu is the capital and largest metropolitan city of Nepal. The city is the urban core of the Kathmandu Valley in the Himalayas.

Kathmandu exports handicrafts, artworks, garments, carpets, pashmina, paper etc. and trade accounts for 21% of its finances. Manufacturing comes next in importance and accounts for 19% of the revenue that Kathmandu generates with garments and woolen carpets being the most notable manufacturers.

Other money making sectors in Kathmandu include agriculture (9%), education (6%), transport (6%), and hotels and restaurants (5%). Although some of Nepal's wealthiest citizens live in Kathmandu, much of the city is living in poverty with a per capita income of just US $400 (World Bank, 2008).

The BEST game training can go a long way to assist entrepreneurs to break new ground in business.

Our Involvement:

Beyond the regular, formalized long term programs like BEST Game and BusinessVENTURES, SAIE business development expertise is also leveraged through independent agents as “special projects”. Because of the irregular character of the special projects, they do not have an established, ongoing program implementation mechanism, thus “special projects.” In most cases, independent agents conduct the training after receiving master trainer training from SAIE. In other cases, SAIE service providers and staff may conduct the training on behalf of the firm. The training is usually customized to meet the unique characteristics of the recipient groups.

Project Progress:

In August 2010, Laura Bayliss administered the BEST Game training to 18 trainees, of which 14 were able to complete the training.

Laura had this to say about the training: "In every way this was a good effective training trip. It was planned ahead of time and the trainees were pre-registered. We began with a group of 18 and of that 14 completed the training. Translation was necessary as only a couple of the people understood English. We had a good translator who seemed not only to translate the words but also the concepts so that the trainees could grasp the learning points."
