Partner(s):

SAIE’s partner in identifying schools and regions that receive BusinessVENTURES training is the Department of Education (DoE). In Mpumalanga, SEDA’s BusinessVENTURES training took place at Kwamhlanga Teacher’s Center. The Center falls under the Thembisile Local Municipality (Municipal Code MP315) which is in turn a constituent of Nkangala District municipality (DC31). Nkangala’s size is 16892km². Educators often come from schools beyond the host region for BusinessVENTURES training. Of the 1 020 592 people, 31.35% speak Ndebele, 22.75 speak Zulu and 15.81 speak Sepedi. The majority of the people are Black African (91.21%). The learner population in grades 1 to 12 are 691905. The 15 to 64 age group of economically active people is sized at about 635017. The non-economically active group on the other hand is about 283210 people. The number of unemployed people is close to 199770. Nkangala has 2658 employers. 731464 people have no personal income and another 46594 have incomes below R400. 65594 people have no household income.

Our Involvement:

SAIE provides schools and educators with quality, innovative learning materials (BusinessVENTURES kits) and the requisite training in terms of content knowledge, methodology in Outcomes Based Education (OBE) and entrepreneurial development. SAIE’s BusinessVENTURES materials conform to the Department of Education’s (DoE) curriculum structure classified under the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS: Grade 2 to 9) and Business Studies (Grades 10 to 12). Learners are empowered through the quality materials and effective teaching, in order to develop entrepreneurial mindsets and business knowledge. This prepares them for either creating their own jobs or participating in the post school life in a more entrepreneurial way.

Project Progress:

Training of educators was conducted in Nkangala (Mpumalanga) project on the 5th and 6th of March 2007 and from the 7th to the 8th of March 2007. Thirteen grade 8 educators from 10 schools; thriteen grade 9 educators and six grade 10 educators received training. Eleven kits for grades 8, 9 and 10 were distributed. The educators expressed the views that BusinessVENTURES materials were far more interactive, fun and easily understood in context than the textbooks they were currently using. The presence of 6 DoE officials on the 5th and 6th and also 2 DoE officials on the 8th and 9nth was very encouraging. They were very cooperative and assisted in every aspect of the workshop.
