Phoenix

Project details

Partner(s):

In partnership with SAIE, The Department of Education facilitates the identification of target schools for BusinessVENTURES training. The host for the Phoenix project, Phoenix Teachers Center is located in the Phoenix settlement in Durban. Phoenix, one of the largest Indian settlements but with a sizable number of blacks, is a lower to middle class settlement. It is on the border with Inanda and surrounded by areas like Chartsworth and Kwamashu. It is found in the eThekwini Metropolitan municipality (Municipal Code ETH).

Our Involvement:

SAIE provides schools and educators with quality, innovative learning materials (BusinessVENTURES kits) and the requisite training in terms of content knowledge, methodology in Outcomes Based Education (OBE) and entrepreneurial development. SAIE’s Business Ventures materials conform to the Department of Education’s (DoE) curriculum structure classified under the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS: Grade 2 to 9) and Business Studies (Grades 10 to 12). Learners are empowered through the quality materials and effective teaching, in order to develop entrepreneurial mindsets and business knowledge. This prepares them for either creating their own jobs or participating in the post school life in a more entrepreneurial way.

Project Progress:

Educators for grades 2, 4 and 6 received training at Phoenix teachers college. On 7 October 2005 attending grade four training were 15 educators from 9 schools and on 8 October 2005 13 educators from 9 schools. Educators felt that they lacked this kind of interactive learning and teaching simulation method for Economic and Management Sciences and this contributed to the neglect of this learning area. They were of the opinion that they could now better facilitate this learning area. On 11 November 2005 17 educators from 10 schools attended the grade 2 training and on 12 November 2005 19 educators from 12 schools attended the training. On 14 October 2005 19 educators from 14 schools attended and on 15 October 2005, 18 educators from 14 schools attended grade 6 training.

These materials comply with all the requirements to teach the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) learning area (which includes entrepreneurship.) These resources are packaged in a zipped porticase and are reusable year on year.
