Sandton

Project details

Partner(s):

The Department of Education assists the South African Institute for Entrepreneurship with the identification of schools and regions for BusinessVENTURES training. This training took place in Sandton. Sandton is a town in the northern part of the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Area, South Africa in the Gauteng Province. Sandton is the new financial centre of South Africa and Johannesburg's premier business centre. However although this training took place in Sandton, some of the beneficiary schools come from much disadvantages areas like Zitikene Secondary School from Tembisa. Tembisa is a large township situated north of Kempton Park on the East Rand. It was established in 1957 when Africans were resettled from Alexandra and other areas in Edenvale, Kempton Park, Midrand and Germiston.

Our Involvement:

SAIE provides schools and educators with quality, innovative learning materials (BusinessVENTURES kits) and the requisite training in terms of content knowledge, methodology in Outcomes Based Education (OBE) and entrepreneurial development. SAIE’s BusinessVENTURES materials conform to the Department of Education’s (DoE) curriculum structure classified under the Economic and management Sciences (EMS: Grade 2 to 9) and Business Studies (Grades 10 to 12). Learners are empowered through the quality materials and effective teaching, in order to develop entrepreneurial mindsets and business knowledge. This prepares them for either creating their own jobs or participating in the post school life in a more entrepreneurial way.

Project Progress:

In October 2005, 22 educators received BusinessVENTURES training from SAIE. Three additional educators from 2 different schools joined the training. The training was attended by a Deputy Education Specialist from the Department of Education (DoE). 30 BusinessVENTURES kits were distributed to the original 2 schools (Zitikeni and Masisebenze) and also to the school that joined, Barnato Park High School. Two follow-up support visits were carried out during March and May 2006. During the first follow-up, visits were conducted at Masisebenze on 15 March and 2006 and at Zitikene on 16 March 2006. During the 16 March 2006 visit, 15 educators attended the workshop and 3 were new to the programme. During the second follow-up, from 15 to 17 May 2006, 14 educators attended the workshop with 2 new educators joining the program. Educators reported that the assessment cards made their task easier and that BusinessVENTURES could be integrated with accounting and business economics.
