Partner(s):The Social Change Assistance Trust (SCAT) whose mission is to empower the rural poor, to strengthen civil society and to promote social change, promotes vibrant and sustainable communities in South Africa. Besides local economic development, SCAT has a broader focus on strengthening civil society, promoting social change, human rights, gender equity and HIV-AIDS. SCAT works in partnership with rural community-based organizations to support local agencies operating in the Northern, Eastern and Western Cape, Free State and North West Provinces. More information on SCAT is available on their website http://www.scat.org.za Our Involvement:SAIE’s AgriPlanner training fulfills the skills component of SCAT’s local economic development and capacity building mission. As a result of AgriPlanner, beneficiary communities are able to achieve income generation, food security and job creation which are practical and vital dimensions of the broader community empowerment and social change process incorporating civil society strengthening, gender equity and associated institutional capacity building. SAIE seeks to train up to 16 facilitators and 2 SCAT staff members, issue attendance certificate and provide support for one complete year during which trained facilitators roll out training to the community. Project Progress:Training took place between 19 and 23 February 2007. All the 18 expected trainees attended: 16 SCAT facilitators and 2 staff members. 10 of them were females. Practicals were carried out at the mining town of Nabadeep, some 10 kilometers away from the Springbok. At Nabadeep, more community members from adjacent areas who were likely to be beneficiaries of AgriPlanner were addressed and therefore managed to get an early glimpse of AgriPlanner. At the end of the training, 200 AgriPlanner kits were dispensed. A five day support visit was conducted in November 2007. The project is being implemented at Nababeep (66 house and 2 community gardens), Spoegrivier (12 house gardens, one community and one school garden), Port Nolloth (2 house gardens and one community garden) and Kommagas (one community garden). Final accreditation of trained facilitators is still in progress. |
