Sibanye

Project details

Partner(s):

Sibanye Economic Empowerment is a coalition of Non Governmental and Community Based Organizations based in Khayelitsha (Tygerberg administrative area). Sibanye promotes the crafts made by community members who are HIV infected and affected. Sibanye also facilitates several non-craft income generating projects, an indispensable component of all their projects. The coalition was conceived from the advocacy of the AIDS networking forum, Multi Sectoral Action Teams (MSAT), a City of Cape Town initiative. The Khayelitsha area was selected by The City of Cape Town’s Urban Renewal Programme, an initiative of President Thabo Mbeki, the initial funders of Sibanye. More information about Sibanye may be accessed on their website http://www.sibanye.org.za

Our Involvement:

In line with Sibanye's pervasive income generating component in their projects, SAIE provided Starter Plan training to their community projects. SAIE's Starter Plan process is crucial to help Sibanye's HIV patients with much needed income from their activities. In this project, SAIE provided Starter Plan training to 18 project members of Sibanye. Starter Plan gives Sibanye trainees a wide set of generic business skills which can be applied elsewhere. In addition, SAIE developed a marketing module which specifically addresses the marketing issues that have created problems affecting small scale entrepreneurs when marketing their businesses. This module is now a permanent addition to all BEST Game courses.

Project Progress:

Some project members have started their own craft businesses and they do their own purchasing, marketing, costing. Some project members have secured orders for their manufactured products. Some have added more product lines to their existing range.
