Siyakhana

Project details

Partner(s):

The Siyakhana Permaculture Food Garden was established as an urban agriculture programme in Johannesburg’s inner city, to address the needs of food insecure children, and people living with AIDS. This Programme is core to the larger envisaged Food Gardens Initiative, the objective being to establish this Garden as the hub programme with outlying “spoke” projects. The vision of the Food Gardens Initiative is, therefore, to facilitate the nurture and development of a sustainable and productive environment necessary for the improvement of the health, social and economic status of South African inner city communities, through the establishment of replicable, model urban, permaculture food garden systems for food production, education, research, and empowerment communities (particularly women and youth) through training, employment, and income-generating opportunities.

Our Involvement:

The communities that benefit from the Siyakhana Permaculture Food Garden Project receive SAIE’s AgriPlanner training in order to achieve the technical competencies necessary for them to operate their micro agribusiness more professionally. Sixteen recipients of AgriPlanner training diffuse their know how to the broader communities through subsequent trainings and mentoring. SAIE’s material is also user-friendly making them appropriate for communities with large disparities in literacy levels.

Project Progress:

The initial training of Siyakhana took place at Bezuidenhout Park from 09 – 13 February 2009. Nineteen persons received trainng, including three members of the Rainbow Nation Farmers. The members then requsted training for their other 29 members.

The training of the Rainbow Nation Farmers took place at Eldorado Park from 25 – 29 May 2009. The training of the Rainbow Nation Farmers was then used to observe the Siyakhana trained facilitators implementing the AgriPlanner programme. Rainbow is implementing its newly acquired skills on its 60ha piece of land and plans to take the AgriPlanner programme into some 20 schools in Eldorado Park.

Support tp Siyakhana and the Rainbow Nation Farmers will continue during 2010.

Featured Product

Agri Planner

The AgriPlanner business simulation training tool is designed to assist emerging farmers with their production capacity and financial planning. AgriPlanner goes beyond the practicalities of simply growing to look at how growers could make the most productive use of the land and maximize their financial income. It provides a comprehensive business development and entrepreneurship training programme that adds value to the gardening skills training programmes and enables growers and small-scale farmers to take the first steps from basic subsistence (food security) to income-generation and small business development. AgriPlanner directly supports growers in establishing and running viable businesses and gives the knowledge and means through which they can begin to enter the formal economy.
