Siyazisiza KZN DoA

Project details

Partner(s):

Siyazisiza operates mainly in Ulundi, KwaZulu Natal where they are situated, but also partly in Mpumalanga. Siyazisiza Trust approaches poverty relief providing technical assistance (skills training) and sustainable job creation to underprivileged communities, especially women. Siyazisiza’s agriculture projects serve the dual function of helping communities with food security and nutrition and the generation of income from the sale of the surplus produce.

Our Involvement:

Communities that are served by Siyazisiza receive SAIE’s AgriPlanner training to equip them with the technical expertise necessary for them to operate their micro agribusinesses professionally. Ten recipients of AgriPlanner training diffuse their knowledge to the broader communities through subsequent training and mentoring. The user friendly AgriPlanner material is ideal for use in communities that suffer deficiencies in literacy levels.

Project Progress:

Siyazisiza subcontracted SAIE in October 2008 to conduct AgriPlanner training for its four year food security project in the Pongola Local Municipality in Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal. The project, funded by the Flemish Government, had been awarded to Siyazisiza by the KZN Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs (DoA).

SAIE started the first year of the project in October 2008. Needs analyses were conducted with nine potential agricultural projects, involving 111 households. The projects were all involved with vegetable cultivation and poultry production.

SAIE provided the AgriPlanner training and subsequent follow-up support, with the DoA and Siyazisiza responsible for the installation of the physical infrastructure (including fencing, irrigation equipment, garden tools and the tapping of a water source). SAIE then facilitated the development of a business plan for each project. Some of these projects are already reaping the benefits of the intervention, with some gardens planted, producing crops and generating income through sales to the local community and retail stores.

The second year of the project started on 01 April 2009. An initial needs analysis, involving five projects, was conducted during July. All nine projects from the first year were also visited during this time: Three of these projects were found to be fully operational, one partly operational, while the other five were still waiting for fencing, irrigation equipment and the completion of chicken runs.

SAIE started the AgriPlanner training in August 2009, with a second group trained in October. A total of 246 persons, representing 18 projects, were trained in all. Included among the projects are 13 schools, where school vegetable gardens are to be established, both to teach agricultural skills, and also to supply the school feeding schemes, reaching a total of approximately 2990 learners. The second year will be completed by 31 March 2010.

The third year of the project is still in the business plan development phase, with SAIE facilitating this process.

Agri Planner

The AgriPlanner business simulation training tool is designed to assist emerging farmers with their production capacity and financial planning. AgriPlanner goes beyond the practicalities of simply growing to look at how growers could make the most productive use of the land and maximize their financial income. It provides a comprehensive business development and entrepreneurship training programme that adds value to the gardening skills training programmes and enables growers and small-scale farmers to take the first steps from basic subsistence (food security) to income-generation and small business development. AgriPlanner directly supports growers in establishing and running viable businesses and gives the knowledge and means through which they can begin to enter the formal economy.
