Uthukela

Project details

Partner(s):

SAIE’s partner in identifying schools and regions for BusinessVENTURES training is the Department of Education (DoE). Bergville, the host area for one of ABSA’s BusinessVENTURES educator training projects is located in the Okahlamba municipality (Municipal code KZN235) of Uthukela district (District Code DC23). The service area (Uthukela District Municipality) includes the towns of Bergville, Colenso, Estcourt, Ladysmith, Weenen and Winterton and covers a geographical area of 11329km². Educators from schools beyond the region where training was conducted may attend. Uthukela is home to some 656 986 people of which the overwhelming majority (93.17%) are Zulu speaking. 94.48% of the entire population consists of Black African people. Uthukela district has about 439953 learners from Grade 1 to 12 according to census 2001 figures. The size of the economically active group between 15 and 64 is 439953 people while the non-economically active population consists of 191599 people. 523160 people have no personal income; another 30086 have an income below R400 and 47038 people have no household income. 107876 people are unemployed and there are only 1385 employers.

Our Involvement:

SAIE provides schools and educators with quality, innovative learning materials (BusinessVENTURES kits) and the requisite training in terms of content knowledge, methodology in Outcomes Based Education (OBE) and entrepreneurial development. SAIE’s BusinessVENTURES materials conform to the Department of Education’s (DoE) curriculum structure classified under the Economic and management Sciences (EMS: Grade 2 to 9) and Business Studies (Grades 10 to 12). Learners are empowered through the quality materials and effective teaching, in order to develop entrepreneurial mindsets and business knowledge. This prepares them for either creating their own jobs or participating in the post school life in a more entrepreneurial way.

Project Progress:

On 28 and 29 October 2005, sixteen educators received BusinessVENTURES training at Bergville. Six schools received six grade 5 BusinessVENTURES kits and six grade 7 kits. Bergville Primary was provided with Grade 3 BusinessVENTURES kits and the Afrikaans participant reference guide. The remaining programs were provided to the other four schools in 2006.

Business VENTURES is a series of entrepreneurship learning resources for grades 2-12. Each of the modules provides all the materials required to facilitate and learn about entrepreneurship and business during one year.
