Volksrust BEST Game training (Charity Funded Training)

Project details

Partner(s):

Communities from various parts of South Africa benefit from SAIE’s business development training administered by Laura Baylis autonomously. Laura Baylis is a free lance instructor involved in the administration of SAIE’s training programmes worldwide. Laura trains members of the community at grass-roots level to learn how to start and run their own businesses. The training is usually customized to meet the unique characteristics of the recipient groups. Laura Baylis’ training in Volksrust is one such example. Volksrust is a town in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa on the KwaZulu-Natal provincial border. The town has important beef, dairy, maize, sorghum, wool and sunflower seed industries.

Our Involvement:

Beyond the regular, formalized long term programs like BEST Game and BusinessVENTURES, SAIE business development expertise is also leveraged through independent agents as “exclusive projects”. Because of the irregular character of the exclusive projects, they do not have an established, ongoing program implementation mechanism, thus “exclusive projects.” In most cases, independent agents conduct the training after receiving master trainer training from SAIE. In other cases, SAIE service providers and staff may conduct the training on behalf of the firm.

Project Progress:

5 people received BEST Game training from free lance development specialist Laura Baylis in February 2007. 2 entrepreneurs have a high potential of being facilitators. The training venue had to be changed accommodate the majority of the people who were not from the venue of first preference.

The trainees really applied themselves to the practical time and expressed satisfaction with the training. The emphasis for this group was to enable them to have the capacity to conduct the training by themselves in the future. A number of group members have a powerful social capital clout and this is an invaluable tool to help them reach the community of Volksrust and region.

Special Projects

Exclusive project are conducted in South Africa like BusinessVENTURES and Agri-PlanIt. However, the difference between regular SAIE training programs and exclusive projects is that the later are done sporadically and that there is no long term binding contractual relationship between the implementer and SAIE. This prevents SAIE from conducting the regular follow-up and assessment procedures. These projects are conducted by a host of trainers and for MIS, website and archiving purposes there is no strict distinction among the different SAIE programs. The recipients of our training are various types of clients from individuals to organisation who wish to gain entrepreneurial skills.
