Partner(s):Communities from various parts of South Africa benefit from SAIE’s business development training administered by Laura Baylis autonomously. Laura Baylis is a freelance instructor involved in the administration of SAIE’s training programmes worldwide. Laura trains members of the community at grass-roots level to teach them how to start and run their own businesses. In this project, Laura trains entrepreneurs from Westville, Durban. Westville is a central suburb of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, which is situated 8 km inland from the Durban city centre. It now forms part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, which also includes Durban. The town was laid out on the farm Westville (named in honour of Martin West, the British lieutenant-governor of Natal) and formed in 1847. BEST game training can go a long way to assist entrepreneurs to break new ground in business. Our Involvement:Beyond the regular, formalized long term programs like BEST Game and BusinessVENTURES, SAIE business development expertise is also leveraged through independent agents as “special projects”. Because of the irregular character of the special projects, they do not have an established, ongoing program implementation mechanism, thus “special projects.” In most cases, independent agents conduct the training after receiving master trainer training from SAIE. In other cases, SAIE service providers and staff may conduct the training on behalf of the firm. The training is usually customized to meet the unique characteristics of the recipient groups. Project Progress:On 4th/6th/12th/13th May 2010, the BEST Game training of 7 participants took place in Westville, Durban. Laura Baylis reports: "I usually find that training is more effective when it is fun and interactive and this training is that. The people don’t dare drift off as there are always curved balls coming their way. Life and business are not always predictable and learning to ride the challenges as well as prepare for them where possible is part of what is taught here. Teaching people to save is always interesting as across the world it seems to be an area where people are not diligent and then when an emergency happens they are not prepared for it. This training uses “Life Cards” to help teach saving habits. |
